These are beautiful Vogue covers from the turn of the 20th century. I love how magazines have been around so long. Too bad I flipped through an issue of Vogue the other day and about three quarters of it was advertising, and nothing nearly so pretty as this.

Nearly every year I re-do my website, and this is the best one yet! I’ve really scaled things down since the last one, which makes it so much easier to upload new content. I’ve scaled back on the illustration side as well; this year I will be concentrating mostly on drawing than painting. I’m usually pretty terrible at blogging, but this year one of my resolutions is to keep this blog (and my Papillon Press blog) updated regularly.
First piece of the new year is entitled Midnight Run.
Two Commissions

These are my two most recent commissions:
1. The only criteria for this first one was that I use a specific tea set that the client used whilst on vacation in England. It was super fun to draw because it was a really charming tea set (and you all know how much I love teapots!). I took a bit of artistic license with Trafalgar Square in the background. The client loved it because it reminded her of her time in England and having tea with her daughter
Ink & pencil crayon on Stonehenge. 9×12.
2. This most recent painting was commissioned as a birthday present for the client’s husband. The criteria was that the husband should be in the painting in his favourite canoe, but it shouldn’t be a portrait of him. The lake should also be recognizable as their cottage’s lake. They sent me great reference photos of the lake with amazing clouds so I decided to incorporate a bunch of different things together to make this landscape. The client’s husband wrote to me later to say that he loved the painting because it reminded him of his youth as a canoe instructor and the painting will be hanging over the mantle in their cottage.
Acrylic on canvas. 24×36.

As I mentioned previously, my website is a complete mess at the moment. I don’t know what happened and quite frankly I don’t know how to fix it. I’m looking at a complete overhaul (again) in the near future.
Anyway, I’ve finally managed to upload my Costa Rica sketches. I went to Costa Rica for six days in August and I sketched nearly every day (I’m so proud of myself). I always wanted to be one of those artists who keeps an amazing travel sketchbook, so hopefully I’m working my way up to that. I’m not very good at filling up the entire page and drawing over other things, but I started to do it a bit this time.
The Teatro Nacional in San José. San José really doesn’t have that much going for it in terms of architecture, but this is one of the better historical buildings. Unfortunately it was closed when I sketched this. I also got a sunburn while sketching this.
A beach in Manuel Antonio. It was so humid here that the sand was constantly wet and stuck to you. I honestly thought I would pass out from the humidity. It never dried so and I kept finding sand in my clothes for the next few days.
Another beach sketch in Manuel Antonio. There really is nothing else to do on the beach but sketch the people lazing around.
Costa Rica is known for its orchids, some which are almost microscopic.
